Design of the 1907—09 British Antarctic Expedition commemorative stamps and first day cover.
A party of three men including Australian geologists Edgeworth David and Douglas Mawson successfully journeyed to the South Magnetic Pole. In celebration of the epic journey, a concept depicting the vastness of the ice landscape was depicted using a bold type treatment, where the figures within are diminuative in scale, only until the final conquering frame.
With typography a central focus of the design, the choice of typeface was critical. News Gothic provided a straightforward and robust aesthetic, whilst also acknowledging the historic moment. A modern grotesque considered fashionable in 1909, it was released just the year prior.
